PSA: Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE up for pre-order today, release date still unknown

In case you took a pass on that Sprint-branded GNex or the LG Viper 4G in order to wait it out for HTC’s EVO 4G LTE, well, now’s the time to get your wallet ready and unleash the cash. As promised, The Now Network has the LTE-friendly EVO priced at $199.99 (50 bucks less on Wirefly) with a beloved two-year contract, while those ineligible for an upgrade will have to shell out around $550. That being said, chances are you won’t get to surf those Long Term Evolution waves when you get device, but at least you’ll be all set once the rollout finally commences. While Sprint’s yet to give an official release date, Wirefly (somewhat reliable in the past) does say the ICS / Sense 4 slab will be shipping on May 18th. Be sure to hit either of the source links below to get your pre-order on.

Update: And just like that, Wirefly’s May 18th date has mysteriously vanished. What does it mean?

Samsung Focus 2 for AT&T hands-on at CTIA 2012 (update: video)

Image

It’s the first night of action at CTIA Wireless 2012, and we’re not wasting any time finding the best of what New Orleans has to offer. To start things off properly, we got some time with the Samsung Focus 2, announced by AT&T earlier this morning as the latest addition to the network’s healthy Windows Phone lineup. Of course, the phone’s no stranger to being in front of the cameras — this is just the first time it’s occurred without any shroud of secrecy surrounding it. So what kind of specs come with the Focus 2? The $50 handset, due out on May 20th, offers a 4-inch Super AMOLED WVGA display, a 1.4GHz CPU with unspecified RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera capable of recording 720p HD video, a VGA cam on the front and LTE connectivity.

The Focus 2, without a doubt, feels completely tiny in our hands when compared to Nokia and HTC’s latest Windows Phone entries. And at 4.3 ounces, it’s incredibly light as well — sadly, the device’s 11.98mm thickness was a slight disappointment for us. Aside from the inclusion of LTE and a 1,750mAh user-removable battery, we’re not quite sure the reasoning behind it. With that said, anything with a display smaller than 4.3 inches these days seems immensely easy to grip, regardless. When handling the phone, we couldn’t help but think of the similarly-designed Galaxy Blaze 4G, as the two devices appear to have come from the same mold.

Overall, this isn’t a device meant for power users, and it faces some heavy competition against the Nokia Lumia 900 in price point (though the Focus 2 is slightly less expensive than the Lumia’s normal subsidized cost). But for anyone who enjoys a Windows Phone with a smaller display and was disappointed in the lack of LTE connectivity on the Focus Flash, this will be the ideal handset for you. The Various Benefits of Using Mobile Phones

How important is the mobile phones in human life nowadays?

Billions of people in the world today realize how essential mobile phones are their lives. Mobile phones have become a part of everyday life for many individuals and some could not even manage to last an hour without them. This is also the fashion trend nowadays. If you do not own a cellular phone, you are not in. They turned out to be the personal dairies of a lot of people. Mobile phones have even become the timepieces as people are more likely to check the time in their handsets. This device calculates, wakes people up, and reminds them of all occasions and appointments.

Many of mobile phone models feature FM receivers and the user can just turn on the music to be calmed while traveling or driving. (Just don’t make a call while driving!) And if you like videos and games, mobiles have them, too. They also feature cameras, making it easier to capture crucial moments. This technology enables mobile phone users to access the Internet.

In choosing the right mobile phone for you, needless to say you want something that can give you the best features, with easy and convenient attributes. The fantastic benefits of mobile phones are in store, yet they also have certain challenges. For instance, travelers aren’t so sure whether handsets will work when they are traveling from one place to another. However majority of mobile phones companies offer international roaming technology wherein one can get in touch with anyone from anywhere in the world. With roaming features, sending text messages and calls can be inexpensive and less stressful. The price per call is cheaper than when using landline phones for long distance calls.

One of the most remarkable values of mobile phones is during emergencies, may it big or small. We never know when we or our loved ones may need to make an emergency phone call. In situations when finding public phone is difficult, mobiles are the answer to your need. These devices are also very functional for businesspeople and trading companies because they can easily get in touch with their clients.

Both SMS and calls are exploited by business people to market and promote their products. Through mobiles, one can do finances updates and banking these days. They help find out the latest news through text messages sent by means of subscribing to certain services. There are mobile phones that provide you the information such as names, number, and even the exact map of who is calling you.

Mobiles are of use to the elderly and handicapped, as well. Like for example, the visually impaired have their “talking mobile phones” wherein they can read the text messages. These special talking mobile phones are feature phones installed with software to make it “talk”. Since the unit talks, the visually impaired can read his messages without having a sighted person read it for him.

Mobile phones also provide the user the confidence to get out and go places because they know they can avail assistance if needed. The cost of the mobile phones is similar to other models of communication. If you can have a family plan, your expense for monthly cell phone service can be much cheaper than the cost for using landline service. You can have the chance to call anytime, anywhere.

HTC One X spills its source code, but only for its quad-core half

Not to be derailed by the “restricted” bootloader found on its US variant, One X users elsewhere can now potter around kernel version 2.6.39 and its unlocked bootloader. It’s the latest release from HTC Dev, which now houses bootloaders for phones as far old as the venerable Dream, and means that the official channel has caught up with its eager modding community. Well, it’s just a couple of months late. Those looking to load their boots can hit up the source below.

Amtrak readies conductors to trade in their hole punchers for iPhones

Pilots aren’t the only ones updating their workflows with modern technology. Amtrak conductors have been getting schooled on how to use iPhones to scan passenger tickets on select routes since November — forcing hole punches to collect dust on a lonely shelf at the station. By the latter part of this summer, 1,700 conductors will be using the aforementioned smartphones on the outfit’s trains throughout the US which allows them to track passengers with more ease than manual ticketing. The $7.5 million system affords passengers the choice of printing the tickets or loading a bar code on their smartphone of choice before getting the iPhone’s scan. Inside the dedicated app, riders can book and modify reservations easily without having to worry with a refund from an agent first. There’s only one small hiccup: currently Amtrak’s app is only available for iPhones. But, the government-owned corporation says that an Android release is in the hopper and should see daylight this fall. For now, non-iOS users must load their tickets though a mobile site in order to save a tree or two.

swf converter, Nokia vs Android mobile – Disadvantages Of Nokia …

The prosperity of iPhone and Android mobile witnesses the decline of Nokia Empire. Before iPhone and Android mobile, Nokia dominated the phone sale market in the world. However, things changed, Symbian is no longer sexy and attractive comparing to Android. As a Nokia user, I am looking forward to the new system of Nokia: Windows Phone. Maybe it can help Nokia to remedy the situation.

To be honest, Symbian is far less attractive to me than Android in terms of data transfer. When transferring data with bluetooth, the file you received is sent to Nokia as a message. I received a MV with bluetooth but I couldn’t trace it. Later I found it in my Inbox but I couldn’t open it or transfer it to my SD card or other files of the phone. I sought Internet for help and was told to download X-plore to extract the video from Inbox. I did it but only to find the file was a swf file.

Luckily Nokia is inserted with flash player which is supposed to be able to support flash video. However, what I got was just a song playing in a black screen. OK, I have to admit that this player sucks because video larger than 4M isn’t accessible. To this extent, Android mobile are much better. Android mobile is not inserted with flash player, so you know you need to download one from the very beginning. Due to this, there are many players for selection like SWF Player. Anyway, later I had to convert swf file to mp4 with Moyea SWF to Video Converter. The converted video was almost the same as the original one in quality. If I had known this method earlier, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time.

Comparing to Android mobile, the Wi-Fi connection was another disadvantage. I once tried to connect Wi-Fi with my N97, but I just found that I need to type the shared key each time I connect Wi-Fi. However, Android mobile can remember the key and keep it in connection unless you disconnect it. If you can browse website with your SIM card while you have connected Wi-Fi, Nokia will ask you which mode you want to use for website browsing, SIM or Wi-Fi. However, Android mobile will select Wi-Fi mode by default.

There are other disadvantages of Nokia comparing to Android mobile. For example, in terms of online video watching, Android seems to be more powerful since Nokia could just support a few of them. Anyway, Symbian is not so attractive to us due to its own defects. So Nokia is changing it to Windows Phone. Can Windows Phone wipe out those disadvantages of Symbian and competing with Android? We will see.

iPhone 5 Rumor: Release Date in October – For Sprint

Well, two big iPhone 5 rumors in one day. What’s the special occasion?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting, citing “people familiar with the matter,” that Sprint Nextel will start selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October.

The release date rumors have fluctuated between late September and mid-October. At least one source calmed October 7, specifically, and now this.

Well, regardless of the date, the real news here is that Sprint is getting the iPhone (supposedly). That should be huge for Apple as that would mean the 3 main carriers in the U.S. (don’t forget AT&T’s T-Mobile acquisition) would offer the iPhone, surely increasing its market share significantly in the smartphone market, with which it is competing fiercely with Android (and now Windows Phone). Oh yeah, and RIM.

The other rumor about the iPhone 5 today is that it will be a dual mode device. More on that here.

Yesterday, some photos of alleged parts for the device were leaked.

In other iPhone rumor news, there is also word that Apple will release a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 alongside the iPhone 5.

iPhone Sales Hurt By Lack Of Carrier Subsidies

iPhone Sales Hurt By Lack Of Carrier Subsidies

Anyone who has ever tried to buy a contract-free iPhone has first-hand experience with how heavily Apple relies on carrier subsidies to sell its phones. The price difference, usually in the neighborhood of several hundred dollars, is made up for by the contract users purchase with their phones.

For customers in the United States, this process brings the iPhone into a much more accessible price range. Many overseas carriers, however, do not subsidize phones – particularly smartphones – in the same way. This means that an iPhone in much of Europe costs far more. This, in turn, drives many users to more affordable phones. Many Android-based smartphones, for example, are far cheaper than iPhones even without carrier subsidies.

This explains some of the recent data we have been seeing concerning the iPhone’s market share in non-U.S. countries. While the iPhone still enjoys a strong user base in many countries, Android has been growing at a much greater rate. For example, one recent report shows that in Britain in the past year Android has surged past the iPhone in both installed base (i.e., the number of overall smartphone users who have Android phones) and in market share (i.e., the number of new phone sales). Meanwhile, the iPhone has also lost market share in China in the last year, dropping to fifth place behind Samsung, Nokia, Huawei Technologies, and ZTE Corporation. While Apple’s recent deal with a second Chinese carrier, China Telecom, may help boost market share somewhat, the iPhone’s price is seen as a major factor in its slip to fifth place.

Meanwhile, though the iPhone enjoys a substantial chunk of the U.S. market, there is evidence that carriers may be getting the short end of the stick where the iPhone is concerned. The iPhone definitely draws customers to those carriers who have it. T-Mobile, the only major U.S. carrier without the iPhone, lost 800,000 customers in the fourth quarter of 2011 due to its lack of the iPhone. Yet the subsidies on which iPhone sales rely so heavily are apparently not good for carriers. While iPhone sales have done wonders for Apple’s revenue, the subsidies have taken a significant bite out of carrier profits.

AT&T and Sprint suffer most from the iPhone. AT&T sells more of them than any other carrier, which means that the iPhone takes a bigger chunk of the company’s profits. Sprint, meanwhile, is the smallest carrier with the iPhone, and operates on far smaller margins than AT&T or Verizon. Subsidies for the iPhone take so much out of Sprint’s profits that the company will not even be making money on the device for about three more years. Though the iPhone definitely brings a major boost to carriers in terms of customers, one wonders whether they will be willing to endure the damage to their bottom line forever.

What do you think? Would you still buy an iPhone without carrier subsidies, or would it be too expensive? Let us know in the comments.
